A Day of Beauty for Anna's House

Every student at John Carroll School in
One senior project that really stood out this past year was organized by Kelsey Hagan. Kelsey works after school and on weekends at Visage, a hair and beauty salon on Main Street in
Organizing such an event had many details for Kelsey to consider. Transportation was needed to the salon. The salon would need to be closed to the public. She had to find a day when most of the Anna’s House clients were not working. Volunteers would be needed to watch the children while their mothers were at the salon. Hairstylists, manicurists, and cosmeticians would all have to be willing to volunteer their time.
Even with all of the details to workout, Kelsey never lost sight of her goal to give the Anna’s House women an experience that would make them feel confident, stylish and professional. Eight women from Anna’s House visited Visage where they received the royal treatment, complete with new hairstyles, manicures, and make-up. “We felt like princesses today and the staff at Visage treated us like equals,” was one response from an Anna's House resident.
All of the women returned to Anna’s House looking terrific and with a new sense of confidence. Seeing how good they could look with simple changes gave the women a healthy dose of self-esteem.
Perhaps, what was garnered most from the day was the camaraderie the Anna’s House women experienced with the Visage staff. Many of the Visage employees themselves struggle as single mothers and could relate to the tribulations of the Anna’s House women. Learning that they were not so different than the staff of the salon, who looked so chic and professional, gave the Anna’s House women a sense of hope for their own futures.
In additional to the reward of knowing that she brought light to the lives of the women at Anna’s House, Kelsey also earned scholarship money from her school for her efforts at Anna’s House.
