Position description
The selected volunteer tutor will assist clients to prepare for Adult Basic Education (ABE) or General Education Development (GED) exams. The clients in these programs are women who are at a 4th grade reading level or below, have low math proficiency, and are engaged in either the Families that Work or My Sister's Place programs. Providing instruction to these women will help them to gain a sense of personal accomplishment, the ability to continue their education, and/or gain employment and advance in the workforce.Hours or times of day volunteers are needed: Flexible
Special skills required or recommended for this position: At least two years of college education, have the ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and small group settings, and volunteer tutors cannot be clients of the My Sister's Place program.

Details:
Responsible for assisting clients to prepare for the Adult Basic Education (ABE) or General Education Development (GED) exams. A volunteer tutor will assist one or more clients who are either struggling to meet the requirements needed to enroll in our GED preparation classes or need additional one-on-one assistance in order to succeed in ABE.
Clients in these programs are women who are a 4th grade reading level or below, have low math proficiency, and are engaged in either the Families that Work or My Sister's Place programs. Families that Work cleints are pregnant women referred to the program by the Department of Social Services. In addition to the ABE/GED classes, these clients receive training in parenting and job readiness. My Sister's Place clients are homeless women with a very low income who are involved in a day shelter program.
Clients who choose to enroll in the GED program are striving to acheive a certificate of high school equivalency, which required help with basic academic skills in the areas of writing, math, and reading comprehension for literature, science, and social studies. Participants in the ABE program are working to improve their skills so they can eventually enter the GED program. Providing instruction to these women will help them to gain a sense of personal accomplishment, the ability to continue their education, and/or gain employment and advance in the workforce.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Work one-on-one with students to improve their reading and/or math skills so they may be mainstreamed into ABE or GED classes.
- Develop a method to assess participant's learning, if applicable.
- Assess cleints' progress and report this information back to the ABE/GED instructor.
- Commit to serve as a volunteer tutor for at least three months.
Qualifications:
- Must possess at least two years of college education.
- Must be patient, enthusiastic, and have the ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and small group settings.
- Must be able to develop effective working relationships with clients.
- Volunteer tutors cannot be clients of the My Sister's Place program.
