Harford County Campus Health Office

Welcome to the Health Office!

Villa Maria School is proud of the excellent medical care provided to our students.  School nurses – all of whom are Registered Nurses (R.N.’s) - work closely with students, parents and guardians to ensure that all of our children remain safe and healthy. Parents and guardians first meet a nurse on the day of screening or admission to discuss their child’s health history and current medical needs. The nurse will orient you to the Health Office procedures at this time.  She inquires about all treatments or medications that your child needs during the school day.  Naturally, it is very important that caretakers alert us to any and all allergies that your child may have and that you provide us with a copy of your child’s up-to-date Immunization records - as required by Maryland law - to ensure that childhood illnesses are not a threat to our children.

Every child at Villa Maria School has “on demand” access to the school nurse. In addition to taking care of routine ailments, the school nurse routinely dispenses medication at the appropriate times to those children for whom it is prescribed. The school nurse works closely with the entire school team to ensure holistic care and management of your child’s emotional and physical health. The nurse reviews issues of concern and is regularly updated about any medication changes by the Treatment Team.  If and when a crisis arises, a registered nurse is always available to render medical care if needed.  The school nurse monitors your child’s vital signs and observes for any side effects of medication, per protocol. In addition, every student’s complete vital signs including height, weight and BMI are recorded every three months.

If a child becomes ill or has an injury during school, the school nurse assesses him or her in the health office and provides appropriate treatment.  She notifies parents and guardians of any minor issues and treatment your child received by sending you a health office parent letter.  If the injury or illness is more than just a minor boo-boo or tummy ache, she will call you.  If your child is vomiting, has a fever or diarrhea, she will call you to pick your child up from school.  The school nurse also notifies parents and guardians of any medication your child may have received at school when treated for an emergency, illness, or injury.  Similarly, the school nurse needs to be notified when a student is given any cold or pain medication in the morning before school.

If your child sustains a significant injury or develops a medical problem at school, the nurse will call you to ensure that your child receives the proper care.  It is imperative that the school nurse has a current, functioning emergency contact telephone number on file.  Please be aware that your child will not be placed on the bus to go home if the nurse believes that he or she is not medically stable, or needs medical follow-up.  The Villa Maria School nurse believes that parents and guardians are vital members of the treatment team and that we need to work together to keep your child healthy and safe.  Please feel free to ask any questions at any time, in person, by telephone (410.297.4100 x4130) or by email (ekavlich@cc-md.org). We look forward to having you on our team!
