St. Vincent's Center Helps Kevin Reunite with His Family
Eleven-year-old Kevin and his family came to St. Vincent's Center in August 2008 for help with his "anger issues" which were a result of a bipolar condition. Kevin's parents had exhausted all outpatient services and turned to St. Vincent's for help when they began to fear for the safety of their other children. Kevin was easily agitated and his outbursts of anger usually erupted into physical aggression and violence.
Kevin's family voluntarily placed him at St. Vincent's and worked diligently for the next ten months with the therapeutic team to find ways to help Kevin deal with the emotions associated with his disorder. His parents and grandparents were actively involved in his treatment plan.
While Kevin certainly had problems with controlling his anger and his violent outbursts, he was also a great kid with a fabulous sense of humor. The staff quickly learned that his humor was the key to helping him diffuse his anger. Kevin was provided with both individual and family therapy and during this time, Kevin was taught many coping skills, including utilizing humor in a positive way. These skills were practiced by his family during his weekend home visits.
Kevin left St. Vincent’s in June 2009 and continues to do well. This past May, Kevin and his family came back for Kevin’s 2nd Degree Key Master Ceremony to celebrate his continued good process and the good decisions he has made since he was discharged back to his family. During the ceremony, Kevin’s parents and grandparents spoke of their gratitude for St. Vincent’s for helping to restore their family. Kevin’s dad made the comment that, “St. Vincent’s was the first place that actually ‘got Kevin.’ None of the other therapists ever really understood him or knew how to help him.”
