Sarah’s House mission is to provide safe shelter, daily meals, and casework support for those in need. In fiscal year 2010, our small but dedicated staff, with the help of more than 600 volunteers (who put in 21,000+ hours), achieved some amazing things. We:
- Served 504 families.
- Helped 94 people move from transitional housing into the community.
- Cared for 69 children in our child care program.
- Provided Fun Learning at Sarah’s House (FLASH) for 79 children.
- Assisted 100% of our guests referred to Vehicles for Change to get cars or trucks.
In a little over a year, 19-year old Laney journeyed from being homeless, unemployed, and living at Sarah's House transitional housing with her infant son to owning her own home through Habitat for Humanity, working as a full-time administrative coordinator and being a devoted mother to her two-year old son. While living at Sarah's House, located at Ft. Meade, Laney participated in the SHINE program which focuses on self awareness and decision-making skills as well as parenting classes. She was able to work while her son, stayed in the Sarah's House day care. With the help of her case manager, she obtained a driver's license, a car through Vehicles for Change, and applied for housing through Habitat for Humanity.
