Villa Maria Schools Employees and Students Decorate a Tree for Kennedy Krieger

Employees and students from all three of the Villa Maria School campuses kicked of the holiday season early this year as they participated in the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Annual Festival of Trees November 26- 29 at the Timonium Fairgrounds.
During several art classes, the students and staff worked diligently as a design team to make a 7 ½ -foot Ravens-themed Christmas tree. The tree’s title was ‘Teamwork’ to embrace the Ravens team and Villa’s teamwork. One student commented that, “Making the ornaments and decorating the tree makes me think of togetherness - when families gather around for the holidays. It also reminds me to be grateful for having a tree to share for Christmas.”
Each student created ornaments inspired by the Ravens football team colors of purple, black, and gold. Some of their ornaments included Styrofoam feathered ravens, foam shields, goal posts, footballs, football players, beaded candy canes, and other glitter-infused decorations. The tree was garnished in purple and white lights, as well as trimmed in purple boas, topped with the felt covered Papier Mache’ rendition of the Raven mascot, Poe.
A special thanks goes out to school staff members Noel Alexander, Sister Joyce Helfrich, Gail Felder, Melissa Sugar, Rikkia Dameron, Ida Collins, Helany Giacoman, Marge Ulle, Theo Shatgrin and Joanne Stover. Also, Carol Gilbert and her Diagnostic classroom’s did a wonderful job linking the Ravens’ chain with purple, gold, and black pipe-cleaners as the artistic garland.
Among hundreds of trees, Villa Maria Schools’ Ravens Tree won a 2nd place ribbon for Children’s Choice Award and also sold for $250. Proceeds benefit Kennedy Krieger Center.
