Students Fill A Prescription for Service

Notre Dame pharmacy students hold a hygiene class at Esperanza Center.
Students enrolled in the College of Notre Dame’s School of Pharmacy are completing components of their educational training through a four-year volunteer commitment to Catholic Charities.
The 70-member class began volunteering in August 2009 at Our Daily Bread, My Sister’s Place Women’s Center, The Jenkins Senior Living Community, and Esperanza Center’s Health Care Center. Students will remain partnered with these programs throughout their four years. Incoming classes will partner with other Catholic Charities programs.
Michele Frisch, professor and chair of Clinical and Administrative Sciences says, “This one-on-one interaction with program participants gives students an opportunity to put into practice what they’ve learned.” Activities have included being part of a delegation that met with legislators in Annapolis to advocate for state funding, hosting health screenings for high blood pressure, conducting hygiene classes, and recording medical histories.
Maureen Monroy, Manager of Esperanza Center’s Health Care Center, says, “The students have brought energy and a positive outlook to their work with our clients. They are developing a good understanding of the barriers to care that our clients often experience. We look forward to their ongoing contributions.”
