The Center for Family Services' Nicole Carey
Nicole Carey, Resource Unit Director for the Center for Family Services, has spent most of her career at Catholic Charities. She began working at St. Vincent’s Center as a Child Life Counselor in 1992 while pursuing her Master’s in Clinical Psychology at Loyola College. She did her externship with Dr. Rob Canosa at Villa Maria and then upon graduating, continued to work for him on a contractual basis. In the year 2000 Nicole had to return home to New York to care for her ill mother but a year and a half later, returned to Baltimore and to Catholic Charities’ Center for Family Services.
“I knew when I left that I’d return. I grew up here career-wise and it was a breath of fresh air to come back,” she says.
As the Resource Unit Manager, Nicole is responsible for recruiting, screening, training and retaining foster care families, educating the community about the need for foster families, managing admissions of foster care children, ensuring compliance with foster care state regulations, managing state contracts for home study and supervising 15 home study workers.
“At the Center for Family Services we are all working towards a common goal of keeping our kids safe and creating positive outcomes for our children and families,” Nicole says.
Laurie Vozzella-Bell, administrator of the Center for Family Services, raves about Nicole.
“From the minute Nicole walked through our door she has helped us improve all our systems . . .marketing, recruitment, outreach . .. she refined our certification and screening process and has done an exemplary job of maximizing resources. Everyone loves Nicole. There are children from St. Vincent’s Center, where she hasn’t worked in years, who stop by just to say hello to her. She lives our mission,” Laurie says.
In addition to devoting her time to the children and families in the Center for Family Services, Nicole is also mom to 18-month-old twins, Nathan and Kiara.
When asked what her secret is for juggling it all she replied, “Taking it one day at a time and staying positive.” Thanks for the great advice Nicole!
