David Turner Cares for Kessler Park as his Own Home
David Turner is the Maintenance Porter at Catholic Charities Senior Housing at Kessler Park community. His responsibilities include cleaning, minor repairs, and assisting as needed. One look at Mr. Turner as he goes about his work tells you that he takes his responsibilities seriously. He is as cheerful, tidy, and organized as the building he maintains. He says, “Everything attached to me has to be in order. I take pride in keeping everything neat and clean and embrace the building as my own. “
Mr. Turner has worked for Catholic Charities since 2005 in various locations and enjoys his job as a porter because it can be “stress free.” He likes to get to know the residents and says he has learned a lot from them and that what he’s learned has helped prepare him for his senior years. In each community, he finds that everybody has something “that you draw from” and meets a few individuals who capture his heart.
He also likes his supervisor, Rosilyn Butler, who “always keeps me smiling.” He appreciates that, “she lets us do our work our way as long as things are in order and will let us know in a friendly, respectful way if not. “
Before joining Catholic Charities, Mr. Turner worked in a warehouse. He prefers his job in Senior Housing because it’s less stressful and he gets to know the residents. Working at Catholic Charities has also given him stability in his life and time to establish good credit. When asked about plans for the future, Mr. Turner says, “Every day, I’m looking for something great to happen in my life.”
Residents obviously appreciate both Ms. Butler and Mr. Turner. They frequently drop by the management office on their way in and out of the building, just to say hello or chat for a minute.
