April 19, 2010

Catholic Charities Executive Director Bill McCarthy read Leo the Late Bloomer to St. Jerome's Head Start students.

In honor of The Week of the Young Child which took place April 11- 17, St. Jerome’s Head Start coordinated a guest reader program at their various locations.  Community leaders and Catholic Charities executives visited the Head Start to read books to the children and then tour the facility.

Baltimore City Council President Bernard “Jack” Young,  State’s Attorney Pat Jessamy,  Baltimore City Head Start COO Shannon Burroughs-Campbell, and  Mary Triandifilou, Branch Manager, Pratt Library at Light Street all served as guest readers. Catholic Charities director of Child and Family Services Mark Greenberg, Head Start Director Amy Collier and Executive Director Bill McCarthy also volunteered their time to read to the students.

"The children were delighted to have our special guests come spend time with them. They had many questions for them and have already asked when they will return," says Mary Gunning, director of St. Jerome's Head Start.

St. Jerome's Head Start students listened closely to a book read by Mark Greenberg, director of Child and Family Services at Catholic Charities.

The National Association for Education of Young Children holds The Week of the Young Child each year to honor young children and thank teachers and all those who make a difference in young children’s lives. The theme for this year was Early Years Are Learning Years
