Willette Builds a Better Future for her Son

Willette, an employed veteran and a single mother lost her job due to downsizing and was shortly evicted from her home. Last Christmas, she and her son Terrell were living in a motel room paid for through temporary cash assistance. Trying to keep holiday spirit alive for her son, Willette was struck by the gravity of their circumstances and knew she had to make a better life for her child.

In January of 2009, she moved into Anna’s House transitional housing program and here she began a new life. Willette worked with her case worker to develop an effective case plan that addressed goals such as housing, employment, education and mentoring. She also took advantage of life skills classes where she learned skills in self-esteem, financial literacy and parenting. While his mom took classes Terrell attended Anna’s House Children Center participating in activities such as reading, games, art and socialization. Terrell also took part in the “Anna’s Guys” mentoring program where he received tutoring, participated in field trips and most importantly experienced positive male interaction and bonding.

While looking for employment Willette’s caseworker enrolled her in a volunteer job to gain experience. With great determination she showed remarkable focus and dedication.  She was soon hired as a full-time employee and has been able to reduce her financial debt and start saving for the future. In August 2009 Willette moved from transitional to permanent housing through Anna’s House and is currently employed at Allstate Insurance Company in Edgewood, Maryland.  Willette has offered to return to Anna’s House to share how, through the support and opportunities given at Anna’s House and hard work, she has been able to rebuild their lives.
