Aleisha's Story

Aleisha Johnson (right) with her children, Caidon and Curtis, and her Early Head Start Home Visitor, Nicole Dunsmore.
Aleisha Johnson came to Anna’s House in of May of 2008 at the age of 22 with her 11 month old twins. A graduate of Joppatowne High School, she had earned some on-line coursework through Harford Community College but had to drop out of college due to financial issues and lack of support.
While at Anna’s House, the case managers referred her to the Harford County Department of Social Services where she applied for and received Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA). She was also linked to the Women’s Infants and Children’s (WIC) program for nutritional training and nutritional invoices for food and infant formula. She participated in the parenting and life skills classes offered at Anna’s House and enrolled in the Early Head Start (EHS) Home Visitor Program.
Aleisha’s parenting skills improved as a result of her participation in the parenting classes and EHS Home Visitor program. Because her children are under one year of age, she was not required by the Department of Social Services to get a job, however, Aleisha studied for and received her driver’s permit and applied for a job at Target. She was offered a full-time position and is now on her way toward achieving self-sufficiency.
