Maryland Issues and Statistics

Knowledge is power. An advocate provides reliable information that compels action.

To advocate effectively, it helps to educate ourselves about issues facing our communities. We do not need to become experts, but we do need to know enough to show that we care about the issue and the effects on our communities and our neighbors.

Inspired by the Gospel mandates to love, serve, and teach, Catholic Charities provides care and services to improve the lives of Marylanders in need. While the current difficult economic times have affected all Marylanders, the most vulnerable populations have been particularly impacted.

Below, we outline the struggles facing senior citizens, children, those living in poverty, and those living with developmental disabilities in Maryland. We also provide examples of how our family of 2,000 employees, 15,000 volunteers, and 20,000 donors acted to improve the lives of over 160,000 Marylanders during Fiscal Year 2011.

“Scripture teaches that God has a special concern for the poor and vulnerable. The Church calls on all of us to embrace this preferential option for the poor and vulnerable, to embody it in our lives, and to work to have it shape public policies and priorities. A fundamental measure of our society is how we care for and stand with the poor and vulnerable.”  - Faithful Citizenship: A Catholic Call to Political Responsibility
